Jan 15, 2018 ~ My God is CHEERFUL, PLEASANT, LIVELY & GOOD-NATURED (Week 27)
Hello!
1. The work is good! Please continue to pray for the people I mentioned last week. :) Nothing too new to report on there. Sorry to be boring.
2. We ate at a vegan restaurant this week with a member from the singles ward. It was enough to remind me why I will never be a vegan.
3. I HIT 6 MONTHS ON THURSDAY!
4. We made cookies for service on Wednesday, but we didn't have any sort of mixing tool. So my companion mixed everything with her hands. Though her hands were clean and we had a great time making them, we didn't end up giving away very many cookies...
5. I broke a lamp in our apartment. I won't explain how it happened because then I would have to admit to breaking my mom's "no playing ball in the house" rule. (We always have a good time in our apartment 😉).
6. But I did happen to get the entire thing on video and I laugh harder every time I watch it.
7. Yes, I will pay for the lamp.
8. I will also be paying for the parking ticket we got because what I thought was a "tender mercy" was really me looking at the wrong parking meter.
9. We helped Sofia with family history work and we will be going to the temple on Thursday to do baptisms! She is so excited and we are too! She is the most amazing recent convert.
10. We Had a combined zone conference with our neighboring zone on Friday. It was awesome!
11. During lunch at this said zone conference, President stood directly behind me and then yelled to everyone in the gym (50+ people), "Who here thinks they can beat Sister Brooks in a free throw competition?" A few elders raised their hands and he chose one from my district. I had no choice but to participate. He gave us each one warm up shot, which we both missed, and then we shot 3 at a time. (Best of 10)
12. I seriously haven't felt that kind of pressure from shooting a free throw since high school... I was so nervous! And in a skirt!
13. It was the ugliest free throw competition I've ever seen...
and I am ashamed to say I won by making 4/11. 😂😂
and I am ashamed to say I won by making 4/11. 😂😂
14. BUT... Not ashamed to say that my companion and I both got $10 McDonalds gift cards which resulted from the competition.
15. We have skunks! I can't quite figure out how they ended up living in the middle of an apartment complex, in the middle of one of the largest cities in America, but there is family nesting near our building. They hang out by where we run in the mornings!
16. Both of the sisters we live with celebrated their birthdays this week. I love them both so much!!!!
17. All of my hoodies, one of my jackets, and my companion's blanket were stolen from the laundry room last week. Someone's heater must have broken or something!
18. We had the privilege of meeting President's ENTIRE family. My companion and I were invited to President's home to meet everyone that flew in for the holidays. We talked about missions and shared a short message about our Savior. It was an awesome night, and we felt very privileged to meet so many amazing people!
19. This week we stopped by to visit a family that was referred to us by a member. When we got there, the mom, who speaks only Spanish, asked us to pretend that we only speak English. She then called her 24 year old son out of his room and told him that she wants to hear our message but that she can't understand us. So we taught the entire lesson in English, with him as our translator for his mom... so he would be forced to listen (#goodparenting=smartparenting1 01). We ended up going back a second time and teaching the Restoration of the gospel (for the second time because he didn't translate it very well.... Haha) in all Spanish, and the son stuck around to listen! We hope it goes somewhere! 😊
20. We went hiking through the forest today for Elder W. and Hermana P.'s birthdays! We went with the Vietnamese Speaking elders. So much fun! We had a blast!
21. Last week for P-Day we went shopping. It was super fun! I miss clothes. Haha
22. I invite you all to paint in your minds a "Happy Christ". Though his sufferings and crucifixion are central to God's plan, we often overlook the 3rd part of the Atonement, which is His resurrection. Our Savior lives, and he has overcome all sadness, heartache, pain, sin, sickness, and death. His gospel is that of goodwill and peace. His nature is loving and kind. His arms are stretched out to us, and he wants nothing but for us to come unto Him. Men are that they might have joy (2 Nephi 2:25). He is central to the great Plan of Happiness. So while there are many beautiful pictures of him that are serious and meaningful, I invite you to paint in your minds an image of him as someone who is happy and encouraging.
Heber C. Kimball said it well, "I am perfectly satisfied that my Father and my God is a CHEERFUL, PLEASANT, LIVELY & GOOD-NATURED Being. WHY? Because I am cheerful, pleasant, lively & good-natured when I have His Spirit. That arises from the perfection of His attributes; He is a JOVIAL, LIVELY person & a BEAUTIFUL Man."
I love you all!! Have a good week! Read the Book of Mormon! 💙💙💙
Love, Hermana Brooks
What an amazing missionary Sister Brooks is!
